The Solent Cluster’s sustainability drive, backed by Govt investment, could secure 70k jobs

The Solent Cluster was formed to lead the region’s ambitions to achieve Net Zero by 2050 just over a year ago.

At the tail end of last year, marking their one year anniversary, the Solent Cluster launched a new socioeconomic report revealing the importance of decarbonisation for the regional economy.

The report outlines that 70,000 jobs could be secured, including the creation of over 18,000 new skilled jobs, as part of a potential £11.9bn economic boost driven by decarbonisation in the Solent region.

The Solent Cluster has since received an investment boost of over £1 million, following a successful bid for Government funding announced in January.

The Solent Cluster will be able to draw from the fund to deliver a comprehensive and collaborative plan to decarbonise the Solent region.

Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, Lord Callanan, visited the Solent region to announce the winning projects. He said:

“Reducing emissions from industry in every corner of the UK will be essential for us to reach net zero.”

“That’s why we are making over £190m available to support businesses, big and small, in making the switch to cleaner, cheaper energy.”

“I look forward to seeing The Solent Cluster’s plans to cut its carbon footprint, create green jobs and grow the local economy.”
